William R. Hiatt, MD

William R. Hiatt, MD, is currently the Novartis Foundation endowed professor for cardiovascular research in the Department of Medicine, University of Colorado Denver, with appointments in cardiology and geriatrics.  He is chief of the Section of Vascular Medicine and president of the Colorado Prevention Center, which is a university-affiliated cardiovascular and clinical trials research organization.

 Dr Hiatt also serves on the editorial board as an associate editor for the Journal of Vascular Medicine, the Cochrane Review Group on “Peripheral Vascular Disease,” and he is guest editor for Circulation.  Dr Hiatt is the current chairman of the FDA Cardiovascular and Renal Advisory Committee (2003-08).  His academic career has focused on the clinical, educational, and research aspects of patients with peripheral arterial disease resulting in over 140 peer-reviewed publications.  Support for this work has included a Kaiser Family Foundation Faculty Scholarship Award, the NIH Vascular Award in Vascular Disease, and current NIH and industry funding.

Dr Hiatt was born in Denver, Colorado in 1950, received his medical degree cum laude from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1976, and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha medical society.  He completed his residence at Boston University Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, and the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in 1979.  He was a fellow in internal medicine and vascular medicine at the University of Colorado from 1979 to 1981, and then joined the University of Colorado faculty in 1981.  He has received two outstanding medical student teacher awards and has been elected twice as Best Doctors in America.  In 2008 he received the Robert W. Schrier Award of Excellence from the Department of Medicine, University of Colorado, Denver and he received the Julius H. Jacobson II, MD Physician Excellence Award from the Vascular Disease Foundation. 

Dr. Hiatt’s major focus for the Colorado Prevention Center is to greatly expand its clinical research opportunities as an academic research organization to develop community programs for cardiovascular prevention and to study new therapies for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
