eQuit Program
Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. The majority of people who die prematurely from cigarette smoking die from early development of cardiovascular disease.

Program Elements

With funding from the CPC, Thomas MacKenzie, MD, our Director of Prevention Programs, has developed a computer-based program designed to help smokers quit smoking.

This program collects information from smokers about their smoking behavior, attitudes, and opinions regarding tobacco use. The information is used to generate tailored video messages about ways to change behavior, to educate users about pharmacologic therapy and existing programs, and to advertise the use of smoking cessation resources, including the Colorado Quit Line.

The computer software is designed for delivery on the web and for free-standing computer kiosks.

With adequate funding, we can place the computer kiosks in high volume facilities, such as motor vehicle departments, community health centers, private physician offices, and government offices.

Program Evaluation

The CPC plans to design a clinical study to test the efficacy of the program with respect to outcomes such as program referral rates, provider documentation, and counseling.

A test phase of the project currently is being piloted in several community health centers in Denver.
